Polk Septage Receiving Station: Steel in the Sky and a Building Taking Shape

The Polk Septage Receiving Station in Winter Haven is moving fast. When we first introduced in on this project in March, we had just completed the CMU block perimeter of the operations building and metal trusses were just going up. Since then, the A.O. Wagner Construction team has been busy on two fronts, erecting four of the eight pre-engineered metal buildings on site and pushing the operations building well into its interior phases.

This project is being completed on behalf of C&T Contracting Services, a Tampa Bay-based firm specializing in structural concrete and masonry with a strong foundation in water and wastewater infrastructure. We are proud to be their builder of choice on this important Winter Haven facility.

Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings: Four Up, Four to Go

The eight pre-engineered metal buildings on this project are manufactured by Butler Manufacturing and will house vital facility equipment throughout the site. We started on the first four buildings two weeks ago and are targeting completion by May 15.

Those four buildings are the septage receiving building, two flocculation and DAF (dissolved air flotation) buildings, and the leachate building. The structural members are fully erected on all four, and roof purlins are now being installed on the septage receiving building.

With the secondary framing installed, the crew moved on to setting the roof panels on the septage receiving building. Boom lifts and scissor lifts position workers at elevation while the panels are set and fastened into place. This was a precise and coordinated process given the scale of these structures.

Once the concrete slabs are poured for the remaining four buildings, the crew will begin erecting those as well.

Operations Building: Insulation, Electrical Rough-In, and Walls Ready for Drywall

Inside the operations building, the work has shifted from structural build to systems and finishes. Spray foam insulation has been applied to the underside of the entire roof decking. On the walls, furring strips are now attached to the concrete block, and rigid foam board insulation is being installed between them. Drywall is the next step.

In a separate section of the building, the concrete block walls have been painted and electrical conduit has been roughed into the slab. The spray foam insulation is visible on the decking above, and the space is clean and ready for the next trades to move in.

The main operations building remains on track for completion by May 15, and we look forward to giving a final recap of our work with Polk Septage.
